Why Fall Is the Ideal Season for Laser Treatment of Sun Damage and Pigmentation Concerns

Why Fall Is the Ideal Season for Laser Treatment of Sun Damage and Pigmentation Concerns

After months of increased sun exposure, it is common to notice changes in the skin: more visible dark spots, uneven skin tone, redness, rough texture, and other signs of photoaging.

That is precisely why fall can be a strategic time for treatment. As the months of lower sun exposure arrive in New Jersey, certain procedures can be performed with more time for planning, allowing the skin to be treated and prepared for the months ahead.

For 14 years, Choice Dermatology, founded by Dr. Marc Meulener, MD, PhD, a dermatologist specializing in medical, surgical, and aesthetic dermatology, has provided personalized care tailored to each patient’s skin.

What Can Sun Exposure Do to Your Skin?

Sun exposure can stimulate pigment production, making certain dark spots and hyperpigmentation conditions more noticeable.

But caring for your skin after summer is not only about treating what has already appeared. It is also about protecting the skin and preventing new changes from developing. Continued sun exposure can stimulate pigment production again and interfere with the results of treatments targeting dark spots and uneven skin tone. That is why sun protection is an important part of any treatment plan.

Why Can Fall Be a Good Time to Start?

Many laser and light-based treatments require specific precautions regarding sun exposure before and after the procedure. This is because some technologies create a controlled response in the skin, which can temporarily make it more sensitive to light. Sun exposure during this period may increase the risk of irritation and pigmentation changes and, in some cases, interfere with the skin’s recovery process.

During the fall and winter, sun exposure is typically less frequent, which can make it easier to plan certain treatments.

Starting in the fall can also allow more time to follow the recommended protocol, complete additional sessions when needed, and monitor the skin’s progress before the months of greater sun exposure return.

Everything depends on the treatment, the patient’s skin tone and condition, level of sun exposure, and individual goals. A dermatological evaluation is essential to determine the appropriate timing and safest treatment plan for each patient.

What Treatments May Be Part of Your Plan?

At Choice Dermatology, different technologies may be considered based on the individual needs of your skin.

Fraxel®

Fraxel® is a fractional laser that promotes controlled skin renewal and stimulates processes related to collagen production. It can be used to address different signs of photoaging and may also help improve skin texture, fine lines, scars, and pigmentation irregularities.

IPL — Intense Pulsed Light

IPL uses a broad spectrum of light and may be recommended for certain pigmentation changes, redness, and signs of sun damage.

Alexandrite and KTP lasers

These technologies are used to address brown and red spots. It may be part of a personalized treatment plan depending on the origin and characteristics of the skin concern.

Before treating a spot, it is important to identify exactly what is causing the pigmentation change.

Sometimes the spot can be a precancerous or cancerous lesion. Your provider will evaluate the lesion and let you know if laser treatment is appropriate.

Treatment Planning Starts Before the Procedure

Treatments for sun damage and pigmentation should not be viewed as a last-minute solution. Depending on the technology selected, multiple sessions, specific intervals, and pre- and post-treatment care may be necessary.

In addition, sun protection remains essential. Daily sunscreen use helps prevent further damage and is especially important when treating pigmentation concerns.

At Choice Dermatology, each treatment protocol is planned according to the patient’s skin characteristics, medical history, and individual goals. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Marc Meulener combines expertise in medical, surgical, and aesthetic dermatology with advanced technologies to develop personalized skin care strategies.
